DURING THESE TIMES OF FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES, MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS ALL WHO SO GENEROUSLY SUPPORT OUR PARISH AND SCHOOL!

Jesus assures us that if we ask Him, God will take care of what we need. The problem is that in our culture we often confuse what we really NEED with what we simply WANT. We need very little. However, we usually want so much more. A good steward only asks God for what he needs.

BLESSINGS TO ALL WHO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR PARISH AND SCHOOL!!

Summer Envelopes
We sincerely thank our parishioners who mail or deliver your weekly envelopes to the parish office while you are out-of-town on vacations this summer. As many of you understand our parish expenses and obligations do not take a vacation when you do, so it is very helpful to be able to rely on your continued support even when you cannot personally attend Mass here.

Infant Baptism Meeting for Parents and Godparents will be on Monday, July 26th at 6:30 pm. Please register by calling 438-6181.

PICTORIAL DIRECTORIES ARE IN! For all those families who had pictures taken for the Pictorial Directory our books have finally arrived! Your book can be found at the side entrance to the Church on the table. Books will have your name on them so please only take the one with your name! The books are very nice but, of course, incomplete because of all those who opted out of having pictures taken. It’s like a family member is missing from the family photo!

THE ST. ANNE SODALITY is inviting everyone to join them in celebrating the Feast of Sts. Joachim & Anne tonight following the evening Mass. A light supper will be served in the school cafeteria to which you are all invited!

Next Sunday, August 1st, a special collection will be taken up for the Latin America Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. This collection is the only source of funding for our 3 Priests who presently serve in Bolivia. Other than Haiti, Bolivia is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Our Priest Missionaries depend on us so that their missionary work may continue. Please support Bishop Casey, Father Hayden and Father Michler and the people of Bolivia whom they serve, thanks to our donations. May God reward you for your sacrificial gift and prayers! Envelopes are in your packet or you can pick one up at the side entrance.

RCIA: If you or anyone you know is interested in knowing more about the Catholic religion, need to receive the sacrament of Eucharist or Confirmation, or want to become Catholic, Come and See. Please call Mrs. Politte at 573-438-3973.

Recruitment and Enrollment for 2010 and 2011 are now in progress. St. Joachim will be here. Spread the word about the gem that we have in our midst. By our baptisms, we are called to evangelize our children, our families, our neighbors, and each other. We must be on fire with the mission to tell others about Jesus. Spread the good news about St. Joachim (school spirit). St. Joachim School is a Dividend for Life (Faith, Knowledge, Discipline, and Morals).

Miracles, Miracles, Miracles. Catholic Schools are miracles. In the Archdiocese of St. Louis, schools have a $3,000,000, maintain old buildings, and hire teachers for 75% of public school salaries. Despite all of the challenges, Catholic Schools manage to educate the whole child which the public schools cannot do because the spiritual dimension is missing. (Superintendent George Henry)

Enrolling now new students for the 2010-2011 school year. Visitors are welcome for tours and a first-hand experience of the St. Joachim school program. Call 438-3973 for an appointment.

Placemat Sponsorship ads were sent out recently to all those who participated last year. If you are interested in placing an ad on the placemat used at the dinner please contact the parish office at 438-6181. These do not have to be just business ads but also “in memory” of a loved one or a “happy anniversary” or “birthday” ad! These ads are $25! What a way to surprise someone for that special day!

WHO'S YOUR DADDY?
We all know the Lord's Prayer by heart, right? How easily it easy rolls off our tongues--but when was the last time you stopped and gave it some thought, phrase by phrase? Jesus' disciples were certainly used to memorized prayer. They were required by Jewish law to say the prayer beginning "Hear, O Israel" (Deuteronomy 6:4-5) every day of their lives. Those words are so sacred that most Jewish people hope to have these words on their lips at death. The disciples, however, have learned that Jesus does not limit himself to what the law requires. So they say, "Teach us to pray." He responds, "When you pray, say 'Father'. . ." This is a shock. Jesus uses a child's version of "Father," the word "Abba," which means "Daddy" or "Papa." No believing Jew says God's name--it is simply too holy--so "Lord" or "The Blessed One" is used instead. Jesus is showing us that we are not distant from God up there in the sky, but close to God's heart like a babe in arms. We can speak in absolute trust, knowing that God will hear us. We honor God for who God is, pray for the Kingdom to be among us, to be fed daily with what we need to nourish body and soul, for the power to forgive others as we know that God forgives us. Finally we pray--and the words in English sound odd--not to be led into temptation. As if God really would. What Jesus' original words meant were more like "Please do not put us to the test" for, as beloved children, we do not want to disappoint our Abba who loves us. This prayer helps us to strip away all complications in our relationship with God and know that God always listens.

Teaching Children the Importance of Mass Attendance
Let’s be honest - all of us have times when we would rather sleep in on Sunday morning or keep doing what we are doing on Saturday afternoon rather than go to weekend Mass. Yet, participating in Mass is an extremely important part of our religious tradition. If you are going to teach a child to grow up to be a strong Catholic, you need to teach them the importance of going to Mass. It is while we are connecting
with Christ through the Eucharist that our faith grows stronger and we can more clearly see the plans God has for us.
If you are having difficulty convincing your children that Mass is important here are some thoughts or suggestions you can share with them.
• God asks us to give the first and best to Him. This includes giving the first hour of our week to Him through participation in the Sunday Mass. Is that too much to give to God who has given us everything?
• We don’t necessarily go to Mass for our own personal enjoyment. We go to praise God and thank Him for all the good things He has given to us.
• The simple act of taking off your watch and leaving it on the dresser before going to Mass can be a symbolic gesture that the time in Mass is a gift of time that you are giving back to God.
• The Eucharist is a banquet to which Jesus personally invites us. It was Christ’s last gift to us before He died. How often should we refuse His invitation?
Words of Life: Families with lots of children are no longer considered examples of generosity, but rather irresponsibility. [Our culture says that] children with severe disabilities are not special angels sent to us by God, but drains on the economy; better that they were not born. And the elderly are burdens. But if we succeed in pushing away everyone who is dependent, then we’re left with ourselves, our ego-centric, sin-rationalizing, defensive, irritable and vain selves. If we never learn to give till it hurts, till the painful reality that we’re not the center of the universe sinks in, we will fail at marriage, at parenthood, at citizenship, even at simple neighborliness.
~ William E. May, “On Being a Burden to One’s Family,” Culture of Life Foundation Briefs (March 26, 2010)
